Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
